On July 1, 2001, an inexperienced climber fell into a crevasse in the
crater of 11,239-foot Mount Hood. He slipped, lost his ice axe
and was unable to self arrest, sliding 300 feet from the Hogsback to
a crevasse at the rim of a large fumarole (a volcanic vent).
In this photo, two members of Western Montana Search and Rescue and
other climbers on the mountain that day begin to rig a rope rescue
apparatus. The victim was lucky that experienced rescuers
happened to be there when he fell into the dangerous crevasse.
