PMR Assists in Search for Missing Ultralight Pilot
Monday, February 11, 2002

At the request of the Clackamas County (Oregon) Sheriff, members of Portland Mountain Rescue assembled in Sandy, Oregon, on Monday to help search for a missing Ultralight plane and its 54-year-old pilot.

PMR was assigned to search a high-angle area near the end of the runway in Sandy, in an approximate 300-foot drop off.  However, the mission ended in less than 2 hours when Boring, Oregon, tree nursery workers found plane wreckage on their property.

The single-occupant plane apparently crashed at the tree nursery about halfway between its takeoff point in Sandy and its intended destination in Orient, Oregon.  Unfortunately, the pilot was killed in the crash.

Upon the suspension of the search, several PMR members immediately left for Central Oregon's Mount Bachelor to join in the day's second mission - a search for a missing snowboarder.
