Looking at a snow layer

PMR's Steve Rollins holds a layer of snow pulled from a snow analysis pit. The several inch thick layer was solid, but easily broke away from a loose, granular layer below it. The avalanche risk in this particular area of the mountain were judged to be higher than normal based on this test.
